Surviving Being Single on Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day - Forever Alone

For many singles, Valentine’s Day is the most annoying, disgustingly, uncomfortable day in the world. Couples are everywhere cuddling, wearing red, and enjoying their relationship. Any action of theirs reminds you of your plight of a single. I’m not personally annoyed by the day, Valentine’s Day is great if you’re with someone; but for the rest of us singles, there’s a way to handle not having someone during Valentine’s Day, and not feel as if we’re missing out on something.

Anti-Valentine’s Day Parties

As many Valentine’s Day events that exist, the’re slew of Anti-Valentine’s Day parties. With V-Day happening on a Monday, many of them have taken place over the weekend, but I’ve found two Anti-Valentine’s Day party listings from Refinery29 and Time Out New York, filled with events on the 14th! For those outside of NYC, doing a Google search for “Anti-Valentine’s Day parties” will best help your cause.

Watch That Movie You’ve Always Wanted To See

Enjoy the day for yourself, go and see a movie that you haven’t seen yet. I haven’t had an opportunity to see Tron: Legacy, so I could easily make some time to head out to watch the film. I will note, this idea can completely backfire. Going to the movie’s on Valentine’s Day is a couples activity; but theaters are dark. You won’t know if a couple begins to make out, unless they are really noisy, then you’re screwed!

Avoid Watching Television

Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday, which means every show you enjoy will have a Valentine’s Day special, surrounded with Valentine’s Day commercials. Do you self a favor and wait a day to watch your shows on Hulu or DVR. Plug-in your X-Box, and play some Black Ops. You could also get some sleep and find a midnight release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but that’s a bit over the top.

Comisserate With Your Single Friends

You don’t have to be alone on Valentine’s Day. Plan a gathering with your other single friends and do something together.  It’s better to collectively hate Valentine’s Day together, than hate it, alone.

Lastly, what ever you do to survive Valentine’s Day, remember, it’s only one day of the year. Tuesday is an entirely different day!

Yesterday evening was spent with a girlfriend who is actually in a relationship. Her boyfriend refused to acknowledge Valentines Day so I spent the evening consoling her rather than the other way around. After the first two angry cocktails, she loosened up and we both giggled the night away.

I’m happily single. I’m single by choice and Valentines Day really doesn’t bother me. It’s the one day a year that couples have and I’m not going to moan and complain about it.After all, singles have every Friday!
